Barrister Gohar was chosen PTI’s new chairman

Barrister Gohar elected unopposed as PTI's new chairman

On the direction of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) conducted its intraparty elections on Saturday and selected Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the new party chairman.

With no opposition, the new party chairman was elected. Since no other leader submitted a paper to be considered for the chairmanship by the deadline, Barrister Gohar was the only candidate for the position.

The results were revealed from a Peshawar polling station by Niaziullah Niazi, the chief election commissioner for the intra-party elections. According to him, every candidate was selected overwhelmingly in the intra-party votes.

Ali Amin Gandapur was elected as the party’s province president in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), while senior PTI politician Omar Ayub was elected as the new general secretary.

Dr. Yasmin Rashid was chosen as the president of Punjab, Ali Asghar as the province general secretary, and Haleem Adil Sheikh as the president of PTI Sindh.

Atif Khan has been elected as the new president of the Peshawar Region, while Taimur Saleem Jhagra was voted as the PTI’s senior vice president.

The PTI’s June 2018 intra-party elections were declared “highly objectionable” by the ECP, which invalidated them on November 23.

Gohar will temporarily replace Imran Khan in the intra-party votes after the PTI had declared earlier that the latter would not be participating owing to legal restrictions.

PTI made quick preparations after the ECP ordered intra-party elections within 20 days to keep the bat as the party’s emblem.

A PTI spokeswoman praised Imran Khan’s work in promoting democratic values within the party in an official statement, highlighting PTI’s coordinated efforts to hold legitimate intra-party elections.

The spokesman emphasized how the previous year’s elections were carried out legally.

The spokesperson underlined PTI’s commitment to legal compliance by moving on with the intra-party elections, in spite of purportedly illegitimate pressure from the ECP.

The PTI spokesperson went on to say that “through conspiracy and oppression, they have once again sent their touts and agents into the field against intra-party elections” in an attempt to keep PTI chief Imran Khan out of politics and the electoral process.

He declared his determination to oppose any attempt to remove Imran from the political scene. According to him, these plots will collapse just as they have in the past, and the PTI will advance toward its goals in accordance with the constitution, the law, and democratic principles.

The party reiterated its devotion to democratic and constitutional norms, unfazed by suspected conspiracies.

In his statement, the PTI spokesperson emphasized the party’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and promoting democracy through the intra-party elections, arguing that this distinguishes the party from established political parties that have dominated the political scene of the country for decades
