Plans for Free WiFi in Public Spaces by CM Punjab
The Punjab province of Pakistan’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has declared the resuscitation of a major effort to offer free Wi-Fi in public spaces. This initiative, which will be overseen by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), will install new Wi-Fi hotspots around the region in addition to renovating the current Wi-Fi infrastructure.
Ensuring that people have free Wi-Fi connectivity in important public areas including schools, hospitals, bus stops, and train stations is the main goal of this project. Furthermore, endeavors will be undertaken to pinpoint extra sites where Wi-Fi hotspots might be set up in order to augment public internet accessibility.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) administration launched free Wi-Fi services in cities like Lahore in 2013, and this program is a follow-up to their previous efforts. However, the project’s advancement was stopped when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration was in power.
Previously, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) was in charge of offering Wi-Fi services. But now that the initiative has been given new life, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will be in charge of organizing and supervising the free Wi-Fi services that are offered in public spaces all over Punjab.
Resuming this program is anticipated to have a substantial effect by allowing people to conveniently access the internet in important public areas.
Free Wi-Fi will help people connect and communicate, but it will also empower them by giving them access to important digital resources, chances for knowledge sharing, and healthcare and education services.
The government’s determination to advancing digital inclusion and guaranteeing that the advantages of technology are available to all facets of Punjabi society is demonstrated by the resuscitation of the free Wi-Fi program.
