‘Unhappy’ with the T20 leadership issue is Shaheen Afridi
Shaheen Shah Afridi, the captain of the Pakistan T20 team, is “displeased” with the ongoing controversy surrounding his captaincy, and the PCB selection committee, which is in charge of choosing a new captain for the team, is “divided” about whether to replace him, according to sources cited by Geo News on Saturday.
The sources claim that instead of agreeing on a single rationale, the selection committee members offered a variety of justifications for Shaheen’s replacement as captain.
The sources stated that the selection committee has also been in touch with the pacer over the issue.
According to the reports, even athletes who are now enrolled in the army training camp in Kakul have been talking about this problem.
It was announced a day earlier that Babar Azam will lead the Twenty20 team against New Zealand for the whole five-match series, having been chosen by the selection committee once again.
Following Pakistan’s sad 2023 ODI World Cup loss, Babar resigned as captain of all three forms. Shan Masood was named Test captain by the PCB, and Shaheen as T20 captain.
But with the PCB configuration changed and Lahore Qalandars’ dismal showing in the ninth season of the Pakistan Super League, Babar has become the clear favorite to take the coveted spot.
Also present on Thursday was head Operating Officer Salman Naseer, along with members of the selection committee Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq, Bilal Afzal, and Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla. The meeting was chaired by PCB head Mohsin Naqvi.
Members of the selection committee gave their suggestions for the skipper of the national cricket team at the late-night meeting.
Possible leadership and coaching staff changes for the 2024 T20 World Cup were discussed.
By hiring different coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket, the PCB hopes to take a novel approach. In this respect, an advertising has been posted on the board’s website.
Jason Gillespie will probably be in charge of coaching efforts for the red-ball version of cricket, while Gary Kirsten is being considered for the position of head coach in white-ball cricket.
