Use and sale of plastic bags will be prohibited in Karachi

Use and sale of plastic bags will be prohibited in Karachi

The province government has made the decision to outlaw the usage of plastic bags of any kind and to stop selling them inside Karachi’s boundaries.

According to Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, using plastic bags clogs stormwater drains and sewerage systems, which makes flooding a problem when it rains. He said that even though billions of rupees are spent every year on drain cleaning, plastic bags continue to block the pipes, making matters worse during the rainy season.

“In light of these issues, it has been decided as a matter of principle that necessary legislation will be enacted at the provincial level to enforce a ban on the usage of plastic bags in Karachi, similar to Islamabad’s model,” Wahab added.

He went on to say that while carrying out their duties, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other civic organizations will take all necessary precautions to safeguard Karachi from environmental pollution and other problems. To this end, a cooperative plan will be developed and promptly put into action.
