Following his cancer diagnosis, King Charles will go abroad for the first time
King Charles has confirmed that he will be traveling overseas for the first time since revealing his cancer diagnosis next month to celebrate the D-Day Landings’ 80th anniversary.
The 75-year-old British king will travel to Normandy, France, on June 6 with Queen Camilla, according to People Magazine. They will be attending the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion’s memorial event at the British Normandy Memorial, which will honor the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
This trip will be the King’s first overseas travel since he revealed his cancer diagnosis on February 5.
King Charles continued to labor behind the scenes and give small private audiences, but he also decreased his official royal duties for several months during treatment after the public disclosure.
Weekend church attendance was commonplace for him, and following Easter Sunday worship, he even welcomed well-wishers.
Together with Queen Camilla, the royal formally resumed public appearances on April 30 when they visited a London cancer hospital.
The King has been keeping a hectic schedule in recent weeks despite continuing treatment. He appointed his heir, Prince William, to a military position and went on a solo expedition to visit with the faculty and families of the Royal School of Military Engineering.
On May 17, Buckingham Palace declared that the British royal family will be going on several events in honor of the D-Day anniversary.
Prince William, along with King Charles and Queen Camilla, will be present at Portsmouth for the UK’s national remembrance ceremony on June 5.
In addition, the 41-year-old Prince of Wales will take part in two ceremonies on June 6th: the Government of Canada-hosted Canadian commemorative service at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, and the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach in Saint Laurent sur Mer, where he will join more than 25 heads of state and veterans from around the world in honor of the historic anniversary.
