Pakistan education ministers decided to keep schools open

A meeting presided over by Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood and comprising his provincial counterparts decided Thursday that Pakistan’s schools would remain open, as of now, despite the rising number of coronavirus infections and deaths.

Later the decision was made unanimously by all provincial education ministers after health ministry officials briefed the participants of the online meeting on Pakistan’s coronavirus situation.

Subsequently, the meeting’s participants agreed that in the current situation, there was no need to close the educational institutes.

Educational institutes across the country will remain open,” the ministers decided.

Earlier Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood on Monday clarified that schools and educational institutions across Pakistan are not closing despite a surge in coronavirus cases across the country.

“Rumours again afloat regarding school closures. However it is again clarified that educational institutions are NOT being closed,” he announced via a tweet.

Meanwhile, he stated that the government will continue to monitor the health of students, teachers, and school staff. “But recently at the moment, no such decision (about closing schools or educational institutions) has been made.”
