Polio Vaccine Campaign to Start in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar

According to sources, a new polio vaccine campaign will begin soon in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar. This special campaign will run for the next four months and is based on advice from international polio experts.

In this campaign, children will get IPV injections (a type of polio vaccine). These injections work like a booster to make their body stronger against the polio virus. This step is important because experts are worried that low immunity is helping the wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) to spread.

The campaign will be done in phases, and in each phase, children will be given the vaccine on one day to make the vaccine more effective.

A group of international polio experts called the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) gave this suggestion during a recent meeting in Islamabad. International health organizations will provide the vaccines to help stop the virus from spreading.

Vaccine Refusals Still a Big Problem

In a previous anti-polio campaign held from April 21 to 27, 2025, there were more than 60,000 cases where parents refused to vaccinate their children.

Most refusals came from Sindh province, especially Karachi, where over 37,000 families said no to the vaccine.

Balochistan reported more than 3,500 refusal cases, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had a 0.4% refusal rate. Parents in Punjab and Islamabad also refused to give the vaccine to their children.

Officials are still very worried about this vaccine hesitancy, as it is a major hurdle in completely ending polio in Pakistan.
