Europe Heatwave Kills 5 Sparks Fires in Spain

This week, a strong heatwave hit Europe. It broke high temperature records, closed schools, and made fires more likely.

In Spain’s Catalonia region, about 14,000 people had to stay inside their homes on Tuesday because two wildfires started at the same time in the Lerida area.

In one fire near the city of Cosco, firefighters found two people dead, according to the fire and emergency service.

The cause of the fire is not clear. But the hot weather, dry land, and strong winds from storms made the fire worse.

The president of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, said he was very sad about the two deaths from the fire.

Very Hot Weather in Europe Causes Deaths and Fires

Earlier, a 2-year-old boy died after being left for hours in a hot car in the sun.

Spain is facing a very strong heatwave, with temperatures going over 40°C (104°F) in many places. Many areas broke their June heat records.

Also, two men died—one in Cordoba and one in Barcelona—while working on the road. They probably died from heatstroke.

Scientists say that climate change caused by humans is making heat waves and storms worse.

In past heatwaves, tens of thousands of people have died in Europe. That’s why officials are warning older people, children, the sick, and others who may be at higher risk from this “silent killer”.
