Court Summons NEPRA Over K-Electric’s Illegal Load Shedding
The High Court has called NEPRA’s regional head to appear in person on July 25.
Justice Faisal Kamal Alam, who is hearing the case, said, “We live in this city and know how load shedding is happening. We also know what K-Electric is doing here. We feel the pain of the people. But this case should be heard by a constitutional bench.”
The lawyer for the people who filed the case said, “A regular bench has heard similar cases before. We are not asking for a court order, just a clear statement (declaration) from the court.”
Lawyer Muhammad Vawda said, “K-Electric is doing up to 18 hours of load shedding, which goes against the rules. The petitioners have also complained to NEPRA, but no decision has been made yet.”
The case was filed by nine Town Chairmen from Jamaat-e-Islami. They want the court to order NEPRA to take action against K-Electric.
The petition says, “High courts have already said that electricity is a basic right. But K-Electric does not follow any legal or constitutional rules. The federal government is responsible for making and supplying electricity.”
It also says, “NEPRA already said K-Electric’s load shedding is illegal, and even the people who pay their bills are suffering. NEPRA called this practice illegal on April 2 last year.”
The federal government, K-Electric, and NEPRA have all been made parties in this case.
