PM Orders Urgent Flood Safety Steps Along Indus River
The Prime Minister has asked the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), rescue teams, and local authorities to take quick steps to protect people from possible floods along the Indus River and other rivers.
He told the NDMA to work closely with Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to handle the flood situation better.
A press release from the Prime Minister’s Office said that the NDMA should also keep in close contact with provincial governments and other important departments.
The Prime Minister asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to give the public correct and real-time updates using all available means.
He is worried that opening the Tarbela Dam spillways might cause more flooding in the lower areas of the Indus River.
All provinces have been told to keep running public awareness campaigns about possible flooding.
The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has been told to inform the public through the media about areas that are at high, medium, or low risk of flooding, so people can stay alert and safe.
The Prime Minister also said that all provinces must be fully ready in advance, and the NDMA should make sure this happens.
