Bihar 5 Killed Over Witchcraft Allegation 3 Arrested

Police in Bihar, a state in northern India, said they have arrested three people who admitted to killing five members of the same family.

Among those killed were three women, including a 75-year-old woman.

According to police, the main suspect believed that one of the victims caused the death of his son through witchcraft. He blamed the man and his family for practicing black magic.

The suspects beat the five victims to death. After the killings, they put the bodies on a tractor and threw them into a pond.

Both the killers and the victims belonged to the Oraon tribe. Bihar is India’s poorest state, with around 130 million people, and most of them follow the Hindu religion.

Three Arrested for Killing Five People Over Witchcraft Accusation in Bihar

Even though the government runs awareness campaigns, belief in witchcraft is still strong in rural and tribal areas of India.

To stop such crimes, some states — including Bihar — have passed laws against violence linked to superstitions.

In many cases, women are called witches and then attacked. But killing an entire family, like in this case, is seen as an especially shocking act.

Between 2010 and 2021, more than 1,500 people — mostly women — were killed in India for allegedly practicing witchcraft, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Sometimes these attacks are not only about superstition. People also use witchcraft accusations to take someone’s land or property.
