SBCA Begins Demolition Drive in Karachi After Lyari Building Collapse
The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has launched a citywide crackdown against illegally constructed and under-construction buildings across Karachi, days after a deadly building collapse in Lyari claimed over 25 lives.
According to the SBCA’s newly announced action plan, demolition of unauthorized structures will begin immediately in densely populated areas, in coordination with local district administrations. The costs of the demolitions will be recovered from property owners. In case of non-payment, recovery will be ensured through tax liabilities.
The authority has assured that all demolitions will be carried out under strict safety protocols. SBCA’s Additional Directors, District and Regional Directors, as well as the Director of Demolition, have been directed to begin immediate implementation of the plan. Daily progress reports will be submitted to the provincial government.
SBCA Launches Crackdown on Illegal Constructions in Karachi Following Deadly Lyari Collapse
The crackdown follows a tragic incident in Karachi’s Lyari area, where a residential building in Baghdadi collapsed last week, leaving over two dozen dead. In a major development on Thursday, Karachi police arrested more than 10 individuals in connection with the collapse, including at least seven SBCA officials and several owners of the residential units.
Sources revealed that the arrested officials were directly involved in the building’s approval and oversight process, raising serious concerns about regulatory failures within the SBCA.
The city administration has vowed to hold all responsible accountable and prevent such tragedies in the future through strict enforcement measures.
