Lyari Building Collapse Kills 27; SBCA Officials Booked, Karachi Crackdown Announced
KARACHI – A tragic building collapse in Lyari’s Baghdadi area has claimed the lives of 27 people, leaving four others injured, prompting a full-scale investigation and triggering a citywide crackdown on illegal constructions by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).
The FIR has been lodged on behalf of an officer from the Local Government Housing and Town Planning Department. According to the police report, SBCA officials had prior knowledge of the building’s dangerous condition dating back to 2022, but failed to take effective action.
The report, submitted after initial inquiries, holds 14 individuals responsible, including six SBCA directors and the building owner. Authorities allege gross negligence and misconduct, stating these failures directly caused the structure’s collapse.
The building, a ground-plus-five-floor complex built in 1986, had been declared unsafe and unfit for living. Despite warnings, no evacuation or repair efforts were made, resulting in one segment of the structure collapsing completely.
SBCA Launches Citywide Demolition Drive
In the aftermath, the SBCA has announced a sweeping anti-encroachment operation targeting illegally constructed and ongoing unauthorized buildings across Karachi. The department said that demolitions will be carried out at the cost of property owners, and recovery will be made via tax liabilities if owners fail to pay.
The authority stated that the operation will commence in densely populated areas and will be conducted in coordination with district administrations. SBCA also assured that all safety protocols will be strictly followed during demolition efforts.
The collapse and the resulting deaths have sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability and reform within Karachi’s building regulation authorities.
