First-Ever Hermès Birkin Bag Sells for Record $10.1 Million in Paris
PARIS – The original Hermès Birkin bag — the very first of its kind, handmade for legendary British-French actor Jane Birkin in 1984 — has been sold at auction for a record-breaking price of $10.1 million.
The historic sale took place at Sotheby’s Paris on Thursday, where a private Japanese collector placed the winning bid over the phone. The hammer price was €7 million, but with the addition of auction house fees, the final cost reached €8.6 million ($10.1 million), shocking the audience and prompting applause in the auction room.
The bag, originally designed mid-flight by Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas while seated next to Birkin, served as the prototype for what would become one of the most coveted fashion accessories in the world. Worn daily by the actor for nearly a decade, the tote became a timeless symbol of luxury, elegance, and exclusivity.

Aurelie Vassy, head of Handbags and Fashion at Sotheby’s Europe and Middle East, remarked, “It was a travel bag. It was worn for nine years by Jane Birkin daily, and the form is still very beautiful.”
The sale underscores the legendary status of the Birkin bag. Even regular editions retail for over $10,000, while rare or celebrity-owned versions often command much higher prices.
The French fashion house later introduced smaller and more accessible versions of the design, making the Birkin a staple of global high fashion.
