Xi Lavrov Push Stronger China Russia Alliance at SCO Summit
Xi Jinping Urges Closer China-Russia Ties, Calls for Just Global Order at SCO Talks
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger strategic coordination with Russia, emphasizing deeper cooperation on global platforms and promoting a more equitable international order. Xi made these remarks during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.
President Xi stated that China and Russia should “strengthen mutual support on multilateral forums” and work together to “unite countries of the global South” to advance a fairer global governance structure.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Lavrov’s discussions in Beijing included high-level political dialogue and preparations for President Vladimir Putin’s anticipated visit to China. Putin is expected to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and events marking World War II anniversaries.
Lavrov’s visit comes after his trip to North Korea, where Pyongyang expressed support for Moscow’s stance on the Ukraine conflict. In Beijing, he also held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on issues including Ukraine and U.S.-Russia relations.
Despite claiming neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine war, China has never condemned Moscow’s invasion or called for a withdrawal of Russian troops. Western nations have repeatedly accused Beijing of indirectly aiding Russia by boosting bilateral trade and diplomatic support.
China continues to call for an end to the conflict, but frequently blames Western countries for extending the war by supplying arms to Ukraine.
The meeting coincided with the ongoing SCO Council of Foreign Ministers summit in Beijing, attended by top diplomats including India’s Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Iran’s Abbas Araghchi. The 10-member regional bloc, seen as a counterbalance to Western alliances like NATO, aims to deepen cooperation in security, trade, and science.
President Xi hailed the SCO’s progress, stating that “political mutual trust among member states has deepened,” and described the group as a “model for a new type of international relations,” according to state broadcaster CCTV.
