Rawalpindi Flooded After Heavy Monsoon Rainfall; Public Holiday Declared
Torrential monsoon rains have brought life to a halt in Rawalpindi, forcing authorities to declare a public holiday across the district. The city has experienced severe urban flooding, particularly around Nullah Leh, where water levels are nearing dangerous levels.
According to officials, the water level at key monitoring points — Gawalmandi and Katarian bridges — has approached critical thresholds. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that flooding at the Katarian Bridge could occur if levels rise beyond 15.7 feet. Evacuation alerts have been issued for residents in low-lying areas as a precautionary measure.
In a statement, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema confirmed that all government offices and educational institutions, including those in cantonment areas, would remain closed today. He advised citizens to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Emergency response teams — including WASA, Civil Defence, and Rescue 1122 — are on high alert. Arrangements are also being made for potential assistance from the Pakistan Army if conditions worsen. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.

Citizens Urged to Stay Alert
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are using all available communication channels to keep the public informed. With the risk of further rainfall and flooding, officials are urging Rawalpindi residents to remain cautious and prioritize safety.
