Monsoon Rains and Landslides Kill 7 in Swat Babusar 16 Missing

Torrential Rains, Landslides Kill 7 in Swat and Babusar; 16 Missing

Severe monsoon rains triggered deadly landslides and flash floods across parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, leaving at least seven dead—including four children—and 16 others missing, officials said on Monday.

In Swat district, relentless downpours caused multiple landslides and surged river currents. In the remote Shanko area of Madyan, a landslide hit a house, killing three children and injuring their mother. Meanwhile, in Malam Jabba’s Sodher area, flash floods swept away two children. One of them, a 7-year-old boy, was confirmed dead, while the other remains unaccounted for. Rescue teams are still searching for the missing child.

Intermittent rainfall continues in the upper Swat region, leading to rising water levels in the Swat River. Residents from low-lying areas have started evacuating amid fears of further flooding. Locals have criticized authorities for failing to issue timely flood warnings.

In a separate but related incident, a cloudburst at Babusar Top in Gilgit-Baltistan unleashed flash floods and landslides, killing three tourists and leaving at least 15 others missing. The extreme weather affected a 7 to 8-kilometre stretch, blocking roads at over a dozen points.

More than 15 vehicles were swept away, and three bodies have been recovered so far. Rescue operations are underway to locate missing persons and retrieve buried vehicles. Stranded tourists have been relocated to safer zones by emergency responders.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid travel to mountainous regions amid continued monsoon activity.
