Cosby Show Star Malcolm-Jamal Warner Dies in Costa Rica Drowning Tragedy
SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA — Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the iconic sitcom The Cosby Show, has reportedly died while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica, according to international media and local authorities.
The country’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) confirmed that a U.S. citizen with the last name Warner was swept out to sea by a powerful rip current. Despite rescue efforts by the Costa Rican Red Cross, the individual was declared dead at the scene.
While Warner’s representatives have yet to issue an official statement, the entertainment world is already reacting to the shocking news of the actor’s untimely death at age 54.
Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner was raised by his mother, Pamela, who also managed his acting career. Named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz legend Ahmad Jamal, Warner developed a passion for acting early in life. He later attended The Professional Children’s School in New York City to hone his skills.
His breakthrough came with The Cosby Show (1984–1992), where he portrayed Theo Huxtable—the only son in a groundbreaking portrayal of an affluent Black American family. The role earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Warner’s acting career extended beyond The Cosby Show, with appearances in A Different World, Jeremiah, Sons of Anarchy, and Suits. He also hosted Saturday Night Live in 1986.
Though he kept his personal life private, Warner is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names have never been publicly disclosed.
