Gaza Starvation Deaths Rise Over 59,000 Killed
Gaza is facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis as starvation and ongoing military strikes devastate the population of over two million people. Medical officials and aid agencies report rising child deaths from malnutrition and increasingly dire conditions across the territory.
Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza’s Al-Shifa Medical Complex, revealed that 21 children have already died due to starvation, with hospitals overwhelmed by new cases. “Every moment, more patients are coming in,” he said, warning of a potential surge in fatalities.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described Gaza as a “horror show” with an unprecedented scale of destruction. Following the breakdown of a six-week ceasefire, Israel imposed a full blockade on March 2, halting all aid until late May. The aid allowed in since then has been minimal and insufficient, exacerbating the worst shortages since the war began in October 2023.
Aid distribution has become increasingly dangerous. The UN says over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed while trying to collect food near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites — a U.S.- and Israeli-backed initiative that has sidelined the traditional UN aid network. Scenes of chaos and violence now regularly erupt at the few aid distribution points still functioning.
Despite Israeli claims of facilitating humanitarian assistance, aid has largely failed to reach those in need. Israeli military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani posted footage showing trucks waiting for pickup, though access and safety for international organizations remain uncertain.
On Tuesday, Israeli strikes killed at least 15 people, including 13 at Al-Shati refugee camp near Gaza City, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency. The camp, now filled with displaced families living in tents, was hit amid expanding Israeli ground operations.
Raed Bakr, a 30-year-old father of three who lost his wife in earlier bombings, described the overnight attack as apocalyptic. “The explosion blew our tent away. Smoke, dust, and body parts were flying. My children were screaming,” he told AFP.
Meanwhile, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accused Israeli troops of raiding the organization’s staff residence, detaining and interrogating male workers while forcing women and children to evacuate.
Ground offensives have intensified in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah area, previously considered a safer zone. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that nearly 88% of Gaza is now either under evacuation orders or military zones, leaving nearly 2.4 million people with nowhere safe to go.
Despite the humanitarian catastrophe, far-right Israeli leaders met in Jerusalem to present a redevelopment plan for Gaza. The proposal includes building housing for 1.2 million Jewish residents, industrial zones, and tourist resorts along the coast.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed 59,106 Palestinians — mostly civilians — according to Gaza’s health ministry.
