Iran Confronts US Warship in Gulf of Oman Standoff
Tense Encounter Between Iran and U.S. Warship in Gulf of Oman
Gulf of Oman — An Iranian military helicopter confronted the USS Fitzgerald in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday, just a month after U.S. airstrikes targeted key Iranian nuclear sites during a brief conflict between Israel and Iran.
According to Iranian state television, the U.S. Navy destroyer allegedly tried to enter waters “under Iranian supervision,” prompting the Iranian army to dispatch a helicopter. The chopper reportedly flew over the American vessel and issued warnings for it to change course.
Iranian media claimed the Fitzgerald responded with threats of its own but ultimately complied with Iranian demands to avoid escalation. A video aired by Iranian state TV appeared to show a U.S. destroyer filmed from a helicopter, with audio of the pilot ordering the ship to steer clear of Iranian territorial waters.
In response, a U.S. defense official downplayed the incident, describing the exchange as a “safe and professional interaction” between the USS Fitzgerald and an Iranian SH-3 Sea King helicopter. The official firmly stated that the encounter had “no impact” on the ship’s mission and dismissed Iranian claims as “falsehoods.”
This latest encounter adds to a pattern of maritime confrontations between Iran and U.S. forces in the region. In 2023, Iran claimed it forced an American submarine to surface while crossing the strategic Strait of Hormuz — an assertion the U.S. Navy strongly denied.
As tensions remain high in the region, such incidents continue to raise concerns about the risk of escalation in the volatile waters of the Gulf.
