Raja Basharat Arrested Briefly Amid PTI Crackdown
Raja Basharat Briefly Arrested at Election Tribunal, Later Released
RAWALPINDI – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Raja Basharat was briefly detained on Wednesday from the office of an election tribunal in Rawalpindi, where he had arrived to attend a hearing related to the NA-55 constituency. He was later released after being taken to New Town police station.
Reacting to his arrest, Basharat strongly criticized the move, stating that his bail had already been confirmed in all cases. “Such cowardly tactics cannot intimidate me,” he said, reaffirming his resolve.
The incident comes amid a broader crackdown on PTI leaders. On the same day, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi issued arrest warrants for several prominent PTI figures in connection with protests held in November.
Those named in the warrants include Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, former President Dr. Arif Alvi, MNA Shahid Khattak, former Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid, Faisal Amin Khan Gandapur, Wahab Alvi, and Hammad Azhar. Omar Ayub Khan, Shehryar Riaz, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser were also among those facing legal action.
The court’s orders pertain to three separate cases linked to the November 26 protest. PTI leaders Aleema Khan and Azam Swati were also named in the related investigations.
The developments signal heightened legal pressure on PTI leadership as political tensions continue to mount ahead of the next election cycle.
