France to Recognize Palestine at UN

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations in September.

Macron shared the news on Thursday on social media. He said, “France believes in peace in the Middle East. That’s why I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine. I will announce this formally at the UN General Assembly in September.”

France will become the largest and most powerful country in Europe to take this step. Other European countries like Norway, Ireland, and Spain have also started this process.

Right now, 142 countries out of the 193 UN members have either already recognized Palestine or said they plan to do so. But some powerful Western countries — like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany — have not yet recognized Palestine.

Anger Over Gaza War
France’s decision comes at a time when many in Europe are angry over Israel’s war in Gaza. Reports say over 59,000 Palestinians have been killed, and food and aid are not reaching people properly.

Pushing for Support
France’s move comes just before a big meeting of world leaders in New York. Macron hopes to work with other countries that are thinking about recognizing Palestine. Some of France’s allies, like the UK and Canada, do not agree with this step yet.

Israel is strongly against the move. Israeli leaders have warned that recognizing Palestine now is like rewarding the militant group Hamas, which attacked Israel in October 2023. They have also warned France that their ties could be damaged.

Palestine Responds
The Palestinian Authority welcomed Macron’s decision. Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh thanked France and said it shows strong support for the Palestinian people and their right to an independent state.
