British Jazz Star Cleo Laine Dies at 96
Cleo Laine, a famous British jazz singer, has died at the age of 96. She passed away at her home in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, on Thursday. The news was confirmed by The Stables, a music venue that she and her late husband, John Dankworth, had started.
David Meadowcroft, head of the charity that runs The Stables, said, “Dame Cleo was an amazing performer, loved by people around the world. She worked hard to make sure young people could enjoy and learn music. Her work will continue through The Stables.”
Monica Ferguson, the CEO and artistic director of The Stables, said, “Dame Cleo was loved by fans, musicians, and all of us at The Stables. We will miss her very much, but her great talent will never be forgotten.”
Cleo Laine was born as Clementine Dinah Campbell in Middlesex, England. She started singing in London jazz clubs in the 1950s. Later, she began working with jazz saxophonist John Dankworth. They got married in 1958 and performed together around the world.
She was known for her powerful voice, which had a range of more than four octaves. Together, Cleo and John were considered jazz royalty in the UK.
John Dankworth passed away in 2010 at the age of 82.
