Famine Unfolding in Gaza UN-Backed Group Warns
Gaza Faces Worsening Hunger Crisis, Says UN-Backed Group
Gaza Strip – July 29, 2025: A United Nations-backed organization has warned that famine is now happening in Gaza, and air drops of food are not enough to stop it.
The group, called the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), said that people in Gaza are dying from hunger, especially young children. It added that the situation is getting worse every day.
“Starvation and death are rising quickly. The only way to stop it is by allowing full humanitarian aid into Gaza immediately,” the IPC said in a statement.
Many Children Suffering
Since April, over 20,000 children have received treatment for acute malnutrition, and more than 3,000 are severely affected. At least 16 children under five have died of hunger since July 17, according to the IPC.
The group also said that “widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease” are now common across Gaza.
Aid Still Not Enough
Israel blocked all aid to Gaza on March 2 after talks for a ceasefire failed. Some aid resumed in late May, but only in small amounts. Recently, Israel announced a tactical pause in fighting and allowed about 120 aid trucks into Gaza.
Countries like Jordan and the UAE have also dropped food by air. But the IPC warned that air drops are not enough to stop the crisis and may put civilians at risk.
“Sending food by road is safer, faster, and more effective,” the IPC said.
They added that children and others who are very weak need regular treatment and care to survive.
Famine Alert Issued
While the IPC has not officially declared a famine, it said the warning is based on data available until July 25. A full report with detailed famine levels is being prepared.
The IPC first warned of a “risk of famine” in Gaza in May. Now, it says famine thresholds have already been reached in most of Gaza.
“If nothing is done now, many more people will die,” the group warned.
