Polio Case Reported in South KP
10-Month-Old Diagnosed with Polio in South KP, Pakistan’s Cases Reach 18 in 2025
TANK – A 10-month-old baby boy from Union Council Mullazai in District Tank, South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has tested positive for polio. This is the 11th polio case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the 18th reported in Pakistan so far in 2025.
Health officials say this shows polio is still a threat, especially in areas where parents are not vaccinating their children. Polio is a dangerous and infectious disease that can cause paralysis and has no cure. The only way to protect children is by giving them repeated doses of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) during each campaign.
While polio campaigns across the country have improved, some areas in South KP still face problems. These include poor access to homes and difficulty running door-to-door vaccination drives. As a result, many children in these areas are still not vaccinated.
Since September 2024, Pakistan has held six major vaccination campaigns. Four of these were nationwide and each reached over 45 million children. Between August and December 2025, the National Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) plans to hold two more nationwide campaigns and one regional campaign. There will also be special campaigns in high-risk districts.
In a recent meeting in Peshawar, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio and the Coordinator of the National EOC met with the Chief Secretary of KP. They discussed how to improve vaccination efforts, especially in high-risk districts like Tank. Another important planning meeting will take place on August 2 and 3.
Officials are urging parents to make sure their children under five get the polio drops every time they are offered. Communities must also help by supporting vaccination teams and spreading correct information about polio vaccines.
Health experts say ending polio in Pakistan is possible — but it requires everyone’s support.
