Aleema Questions Mashal Yousafzai’s Senate Win, Calls for Merit-Based Selection
ISLAMABAD – Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has said that Senate appointments should be based on merit, not favoritism. She shared these views while talking to reporters outside Adiala Jail.
Aleema said she didn’t want to waste time on the topic but believed justice was not done. Without directly naming Malala Yousafzai, she said that many other women were more qualified.
Mashal Yousafzai was elected to the Senate in a recent by-election in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. She got 86 votes and replaced former Senator Dr. Sania Nishtar.
Opposition candidate Mehtab Zafar received 53 votes. Independent candidate Saima Khalid got only one vote. Two votes were rejected.
Mashal Yousafzai’s ticket was given on the instructions of PTI founder Imran Khan. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar issued the official notification. Other party members—Sajida Begum, Mumena Basit, Samira Shams, and Saima Khalid—were told to withdraw by July 30.
In a related statement, Maryam Riaz Wattoo, sister of Bushra Bibi (Imran Khan’s wife), said Bushra Bibi did not recommend Mashal for the Senate seat.
“I’m 100% sure Bushra Bibi did not suggest Mashal’s name,” said Maryam. “Barrister Saif gave a list to Imran Khan, but we don’t know what was told to him or how the final decision was made.”
