PM Orders Fast Relief, Stronger Systems After Gilgit-Baltistan Floods
The Prime Minister of Pakistan has called for quick help and long-term planning after heavy rains and floods hit Gilgit-Baltistan.
During a high-level meeting, the Prime Minister said that climate change is causing more natural disasters in the country. He asked for early warning systems, better rescue plans, and climate-resilient infrastructure in areas at risk.
He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Climate Change to build a special forecasting and monitoring center for Gilgit-Baltistan within a few months. The Prime Minister also said a proper system must be ready for quick rescue and emergency aid.
“All help for people affected by the recent monsoon must be completed quickly,” he said. He ordered a full survey of damaged roads and rebuilding of communication links in flood-hit areas.
The Prime Minister shared sorrow over the lives lost in the recent floods. He also reminded the world that Pakistan produces very few global emissions, yet it is one of the countries most affected by climate change.
He praised the rescue work done by the NDMA, PDMA, Ministry of Communications, and local authorities. He also asked NDMA to provide full support to the Gilgit-Baltistan government.
The meeting was briefed on the July 21, 2025, cloudbursts in Thak-Babusar, Thor, Kundus, and Ishkoman, which caused floods and damage. Over 600 people were rescued, roads were reopened, and five tent villages were set up. 10 helicopters and 2 C-130 planes helped move stranded people to safety.
Teams from the Pakistan Army, police, GBDMA, Rescue 1122, and health workers all helped in the operations.
The Ministry of Climate Change gave an update on installing a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) early warning system. The Prime Minister asked for full cooperation from NDMA to complete the system in the next two months. He also asked for independent verification of the system.
In addition, the Minister for Water Resources was directed to stay in Gilgit-Baltistan and complete plans for a better water management system.
Several top federal and regional leaders, including ministers and the Gilgit-Baltistan Governor and Chief Minister, attended the meeting.
