PTA Blocks 184 Gambling Sites Over Illegal Betting in Pakistan
PTA Blocks 184 Gambling Websites and Apps in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 184 websites and apps linked to gambling, the Cabinet Division told the National Assembly in a written reply.
The Minister in charge of the Cabinet Division said that these gambling platforms were blocked to stop illegal online betting. However, he added that taking legal action against the people involved is not the PTA’s job.
The Cabinet Division also said that all government departments have been told not to sign any deals with gambling-related companies.
It was noted that the PTA’s powers to block illegal content online are limited under current laws.
Earlier, the PTA had warned the public not to share illegal content on social media. It said people must not post or promote anything unlawful online.
The PTA reminded everyone that while freedom of speech is a basic right, it should not be misused to spread hate, false news, or immoral content.
The authority explained that sharing blasphemy, insulting religions or sacred figures, promoting violence or hate against institutions, or posting fake or obscene material is illegal under Pakistan’s cybercrime law (PECA 2016) and is a punishable crime.
