Al Jazeeras Anas Al Sharif Killed in Gaza Strike
Al Jazeera Journalist Anas Al Sharif Killed in Gaza Strike
GAZA CITY – Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif, 28, was among five people killed when a strike hit a tent near Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza City, Gaza health officials and the network confirmed.
According to hospital officials, two others also died in the attack. Al Jazeera described Al Sharif as “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists,” calling his death “a desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of the occupation of Gaza.”
The Israeli military claimed Al Sharif was the head of a Hamas cell involved in planning rocket attacks against civilians and troops, citing intelligence and documents allegedly found in Gaza.
Journalist groups and Al Jazeera have strongly rejected these allegations. The network also reported that three other journalists — Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohammed Noufal — were killed in the same strike.
Al Sharif had previously been named by Israel as one of six Gaza-based journalists it accused of having militant ties, claims that UN experts and press freedom organizations have dismissed as unsubstantiated. In July, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) warned that his life was at risk due to his frontline reporting.
Shortly before his death, Al Sharif posted on X that Gaza City had been under heavy bombardment for more than two hours. He had also left a message to be published in the event of his death, stating: “I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent.”
Hamas condemned the killings, saying they could signal the start of a major Israeli offensive. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to launch new operations targeting Hamas strongholds amid worsening humanitarian conditions after 22 months of war.
Al Jazeera said Al Sharif and his colleagues were “among the last remaining voices in Gaza” documenting the conflict. The Gaza government media office reports that 237 journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023, while CPJ records put the toll at at least 186.
