Indian MPs Protest Halted Amid Election and Economic Crisis

Protest March by Indian MPs Against Government and Election Commission Halted Midway

On August 11, 2025, a group of Indian Members of Parliament began a protest march near the Parliament building, heading towards the Election Commission’s headquarters. The MPs carried placards with slogans like “SIR: Stealing Democratic Rights” and “Vote Chori” (meaning vote theft), raising their voices against the Indian government and the Election Commission over concerns about electoral fairness.

The march was stopped halfway, where the MPs peacefully sat down on the road and continued their protest.

When detained by authorities, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke to reporters, emphasizing the larger cause behind the protest. “This fight is not political but for saving the Constitution,” he said. “The truth is before the entire country.”

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also voiced strong opposition to the government’s actions, stating, “The fight against SIR is about protecting people’s right to vote. BJP’s cowardly dictatorship will not work!”

Meanwhile, India faces mounting challenges on both domestic and international fronts. Recently, the country suffered a significant economic setback when U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 6, 2025, doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, effective from August 27, 2025. This move comes in response to India’s continued imports of Russian oil and follows an initial 25% tariff imposed earlier on August 7.

The sudden increase in tariffs has raised concerns about the impact on India’s trade, economic growth, and employment, putting additional pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

For a deeper understanding of how Trump’s tariffs may affect India’s economy and Modi’s political landscape, see our detailed analysis: Trump’s 50 percent tariff on India: What does it mean for the economy and Modi’s politics.
