Josh Brolin Praises Director Zach Cregger for Bold New Horror Film ‘Weapons’

Directed by Zach Cregger, the new horror film Weapons dives into the chaos that erupts in a small town after 17 children vanish mysteriously on the same night. The gripping story features a strong cast, including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.

In a recent interview with a US media outlet, Josh Brolin applauded Cregger’s daring approach to the horror genre. He explained how Weapons pushes horror “to the edge of absurdity,” blending unexpected humor with genuine emotional impact.

“You’re constantly searching for great filmmakers, hoping to find fresh voices,” Brolin said. “With so much content available on streaming platforms, it’s easy to get bored and skip to the next thing because it all feels the same. Then someone like Zach takes the horror genre, shakes it up, and brings something fresh — something almost absurd but funny enough to keep you hooked emotionally.”

Brolin also opened up about his initial struggle to understand Cregger’s previous film, Barbarian. To get a better grasp of the director’s style, he turned to his daughter and son-in-law, who belong to a younger generation and admire Cregger’s work deeply.

“They think he’s like a god,” Brolin shared with a smile. “It made me realize they’re responding to something I might not fully get. Honestly, I’d rather not fully understand it yet — I just want to work with him and figure it out along the way.”

He went on to say that Weapons feels like a more polished and refined expression of the bold ideas Cregger touched on with Barbarian — proving the director’s keen instinct for tapping into the current cultural pulse.
