Khawaja Asif Seeks Reforms for Bureaucrats
Khawaja Asif Urges Annual Asset Declarations, End to Dual Citizenship for Bureaucrats
ISLAMABAD – Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has called for sweeping reforms in Pakistan’s bureaucracy, including mandatory annual asset declarations, an end to dual citizenship, and a halt to the allotment of government plots to bureaucrats.
Speaking on ARY News’ program Khabar, Asif alleged that while not all civil servants are involved in wrongdoing, around 25 to 30 percent are engaged in corruption. He noted that the government spends nearly Rs 3.5 trillion annually on the bureaucracy and urged the introduction of strict legislation to address the issue.
“I did not single out any individual,” Asif said. “Politicians are often blamed for looting the country, but there is an institution within the government that holds us accountable. Has anyone ever held a bureaucrat accountable?”
The minister claimed that corruption within the bureaucracy was unparalleled and that their perks and privileges were “unimaginable.” He insisted that civil servants should face the same restrictions as politicians and judges, who are barred from holding dual nationality.
Asif also alleged that more than half of Pakistan’s bureaucracy has purchased property in Portugal and is seeking citizenship there. Writing on X, he claimed several prominent officials are part of this trend, though he did not name any individuals.
