Schools in Azad Kashmir to Remain Closed Amid Flood and Landslide Threats

MUZAFFARABAD — The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Elementary and Secondary Education Department has announced the closure of all government and private schools on August 15 and 16, 2025, due to the risk of flooding and landslides caused by adverse weather conditions.

According to an official notification, the Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education approved the decision to keep educational institutions shut to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the ongoing severe weather.

Earlier, the Elementary and Secondary Education Department in Poonch had already declared that all schools would remain closed on August 15 due to heavy rainfall and associated risks. Assistant Commissioner Haveli, Sarfraz Shad, also confirmed that schools in the Jhelum Valley district will remain closed on August 15 because of landslides and worsening weather conditions.

The closures follow devastating cloudbursts across Azad Kashmir, which have caused widespread damage, swept away bridges, cut off road links, and destroyed homes in several areas. In Muzaffarabad’s Naseerabad tehsil, a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst claimed the lives of six members of a single family. Heavy rains have also caused rivers and streams to swell in Bagh, while the Bhimber Nullah in Samahni is experiencing high-level flooding.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid traveling to vulnerable areas until the weather improves.
