Monkeypox Case Confirmed in Attock Resident Returning from Dubai
ISLAMABAD – Health authorities have confirmed a new case of monkeypox in Pakistan, involving a 42-year-old man from Attock who arrived in Islamabad from Dubai on August 15.
According to officials, the patient showed symptoms of the disease during routine screening by Border Health Services at Islamabad International Airport. He was immediately shifted to PIMS Hospital for further examination.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) confirmed the monkeypox diagnosis on August 18. However, sources revealed that the patient fled from the hospital’s isolation ward. He was later traced with the help of the health department and placed under home isolation. His condition is said to be stable.
NIH officials said Pakistan has reported a total of 15 monkeypox cases since the World Health Organization declared it a global health emergency in August 2024.
Monkeypox, also known as Mpox, is a viral disease that spreads from animals to humans, with African rodents and monkeys suspected to be natural carriers. The illness usually begins with fever, followed by a rash that spreads across the body. Other symptoms include headache, muscle pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.
The incubation period ranges between 5 to 21 days, and the disease typically lasts two to four weeks.
