Karachi Rains Cause Road Collapse Flight Disruptions
Karachi Rains Expose Poor Infrastructure, Flights Disrupted
KARACHI – Heavy rainfall in the city once again laid bare the fragile state of Karachi’s infrastructure, causing road collapses, flooding, and massive disruption to daily life on Tuesday.
In Liaquatabad, a newly built road caved in following the downpour, while deep potholes emerged along the stretch between the Post Office and Sindhi Hotel. Restoration work on the adjoining road leading to Teen Hatti has yet to begin, leaving commuters in distress.
In Nazimabad, rainwater accumulated inside the main underpass, rendering both tracks near Sir Syed College unusable. Similarly, Nipa Chowrangi turned into a pool of stagnant water, bringing traffic to a near standstill.
Citizens traveling from Safora to Hasan Square also faced severe difficulties, as sanitation staff stationed nearby appeared reluctant to clear the mess.
The situation highlighted the lack of timely response from civic authorities, raising fresh concerns about Karachi’s resilience to seasonal rains.
Air Travel Severely Affected
The rain also brought air travel to a halt, with operations at Jinnah International Airport thrown into disarray. Several domestic and international flights faced cancellations and hours-long delays, leaving passengers stranded.
Sources confirmed that even 12 hours after the downpour, the airport’s schedule could not return to normal due to waterlogging and technical system failures.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) cancelled its Karachi–Islamabad flight PK-300, along with the return flight PK-301. Multiple other domestic flights also suffered long delays.
International passengers faced equal hardship, with hundreds stranded at the airport. Telephone line disruptions further worsened the situation, as many were unable to get flight updates.
Airport officials said only a small number of passengers managed to reach the airport overnight because several parts of Karachi remained waterlogged.
