Ukrainian Wanted for Nord Stream Blasts
German Authorities Issue Arrest Warrant Over Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions
Berlin — German prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian man, identified only as Serhii K., in connection with the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022.
Prosecutors say Serhii K. is accused of being part of a group that placed explosive devices on the pipelines, which transport Russian gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea.
Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that the attacks were carried out by a Ukrainian team and were approved by Kyiv’s then military commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny. According to the report, Zaluzhny oversaw the operation targeting the pipelines used by Russia to deliver gas to Europe.
On September 26, 2022, a series of underwater explosions caused gas leaks that rendered both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 inoperable. These pipelines are crucial conduits for Russian natural gas supplies to Europe.
