Karachi Schools to Remain Open Despite Heavy Rain Warnings
In a circular to the education institutions, the association denied receiving any notification from the Sindh government, directing the closure of schools amid heavy rains in the city.
“It is to inform that all private schools in Karachi will remain open tomorrow, Friday, August 22,” the circular read.
According to the association, the provincial government has not issued any notification regarding the closure of schools amid improving weather conditions in the city.
Citing the lack of an official notification, the APSMA has urged the management of schools to continue their academic activities while ensuring the safety of the students, teachers, and staff.
The circular comes as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecasted more heavy rainfall in Karachi from August 24 to 28.
According to the NDMA, heavy rains are expected in the metropolitan and Hyderabad areas, which might trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of both cities.
The warning follows the three-day intense rains in Karachi, which devastated the city’s roads and other infrastructure.
At least 20 lost their lives in rain-related incidents across the city, while several areas were left without electricity for hours after dozens of K-Electric’s feeders tripped.
Following the devastation in the city, the Sindh government declared a public holiday on Wednesday as authorities urged citizens to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel.
