Karachi Monsoon Alert Heavy Rain from Aug 27
Karachi, Sindh, braces for Heavy Rains as a New Monsoon System Approaches
A fresh monsoon system is expected to impact Karachi and other parts of Sindh from August 27, with rainfall also forecast in Sindh and Balochistan between August 27 and 29.
In southern Sindh, cities including Mithi, Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Mirpur Khas may experience intermittent rainfall starting Saturday evening and continuing through August 26. Meanwhile, in Balochistan, districts such as Barkhan, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Zhob, Kalat, and Khuzdar are expected to receive rain from today until August 26.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are moving into the northern regions of the country. Earlier forecasts had predicted heavy rain with wind and thundershowers in the upper and central parts of Pakistan between August 23 and 27.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has already issued a weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall in Karachi from August 24 to 28. Authorities have specifically highlighted the risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Karachi and Hyderabad.
NDMA officials have urged residents to exercise caution during the rain, avoid traveling on submerged roads, and stay away from electric poles and exposed wiring. They have also instructed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any emergencies caused by severe weather.
The warning comes after at least 15 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents during the recent heavy monsoon showers in Karachi, which caused widespread urban flooding and exposed vulnerabilities in the city’s infrastructure.
