Pakistan Launches Karachi Peshawar Bullet Trains
Pakistan to Launch High-Speed Bullet Trains on Karachi–Peshawar Corridor
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is set to modernize its railway network with the introduction of high-speed bullet trains along the Karachi–Peshawar corridor, part of the $6.7 billion Main Line 1 (ML-1) upgrade under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), state-run Radio Pakistan reported.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the new trains will reach speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, with major stops planned in Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal. The project is being developed with Chinese support, and the China Railway Construction Corporation is expected to play a central role in its execution.
The ML-1 upgrade will include dual tracks, rebuilt bridges, and a modern signaling system, aiming to make passenger travel faster and more efficient. Officials also believe the project will significantly boost Pakistan’s freight capacity, increasing the rail share from the current 4% to 20% by 2030.
The initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs during both construction and operation, while reducing reliance on costly road transport and potentially saving billions in fuel imports.
Railways in Pakistan, which currently operate over 7,700 kilometers of track, have long struggled with underinvestment, outdated technology, and frequent delays. The ML-1 project is seen as a major step toward revitalizing the country’s rail infrastructure.
