China Trade Chief Visits Washington
China’s Trade Chief to Visit Washington Amid Easing Tensions
China’s top trade official, Li Chenggang, who also serves as vice minister of commerce, is set to travel to Washington to meet with key U.S. officials, the Chinese commerce ministry announced Wednesday.
The visit comes as trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies have cooled significantly since a spike earlier this year, when both sides imposed steep tariffs on each other’s goods. At their peak, these retaliatory tariffs reached triple digits, disrupting supply chains as importers paused shipments while waiting for government talks to bear fruit.
Since then, Beijing and Washington have reached a temporary truce, reducing U.S. tariffs to 30 percent and Chinese tariffs to 10 percent. Commerce ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian said China is committed to resolving issues through “equal dialogue and consultation.”
Li’s trip follows comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who indicated he expects to visit China later this year. “We’re going to have a great relationship with China,” Trump told reporters Monday.
Despite the apparent thaw, the U.S.-China trade relationship remains fragile. Washington has previously accused Beijing of slow-walking approvals for rare earth exports, a crucial component for automotive, electronics, and defense industries. China is the world’s leading producer of these materials.
Both nations have agreed to move forward, delaying the threatened reimposition of higher tariffs for another 90 days—keeping the current pause in effect until November 10.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Boeing is in talks to sell up to 500 aircraft to Chinese buyers, a deal likely tied to a longer-term trade agreement between the two countries.
