Emma Stone on Bugonia and Aliens
Emma Stone on Extraterrestrial Life, New Film Bugonia, and a Golden Globes Memory
Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone has shared her thoughts on extraterrestrial life, agreeing with the late astronomer Carl Sagan’s idea that it’s narcissistic to assume humans are the only life in the universe.
Stone’s new film, Bugonia, sees her play the head of a powerful company who is kidnapped by conspiracy theorists convinced she is an alien bent on harming the planet. The story naturally led to questions about her personal beliefs. Stone said she has long admired Sagan’s work, crediting his philosophy with shaping her curiosity about life beyond Earth.
This project marks Stone’s third collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. The black comedy also stars Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, with a script by The Menu co-writer Will Tracy. Stone explained that she was drawn to Bugonia because it addresses global challenges through a mix of humour and intensity. Praising Lanthimos for his distinctive cinematic worlds, she noted that the film feels particularly relevant in today’s climate.
Stone, who recently won an Academy Award for Poor Things, continues to strengthen her creative partnership with Lanthimos, with Bugonia expected to be another significant milestone in their collaboration.
A Golden Globes Memory
In a lighter moment, Stone reminisced about a memorable—and slightly embarrassing—experience at the 2011 Golden Globes. Speaking in Vogue’s “Life in Looks” video series, she recalled attending the ceremony with her mother and having an awkward encounter with Angelina Jolie.
Stone explained that her mother asked Jolie if she had children, unaware that Jolie was already a mother of six with then-partner Brad Pitt. She described the exchange as both funny and unforgettable.
On the fashion front, Stone reflected on her look for the evening: a peach-coloured Calvin Klein gown. She admitted that she wasn’t entirely satisfied with her spray tan, adding another layer of humor to the memory.
