Punjab Breaches Embankment to Protect Jhang Amid Chenab Flood Threat
Punjab authorities carried out a controlled breach of the railway embankment near Kot Muhammad Yar as water levels in the Chenab River surged to critical levels, officials confirmed.
The controlled explosion aimed to ease pressure on the Rivaz Bridge and redirect floodwaters away from Jhang city. Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, said the measure was necessary to safeguard the city. “The breach was carried out to protect Jhang by diverting floodwaters,” he stated, noting that residents in vulnerable areas along the Chenab had already been evacuated.
Javed added that administrations in Faisalabad and Jhang remain on high alert, with all officers instructed to stay in the field to manage the emergency.
Earlier, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) had warned that the Rivaz Bridge, situated between Jhang and Chiniot, was at risk due to the river’s powerful surge. Authorities said the breach was essential to reduce pressure on the bridge and limit downstream flooding.
Current readings show that floodwaters passing through Chiniot are expected to reach Trimmu Headworks via Jhang. The discharge at Chiniot Bridge is currently 743,300 cusecs, while Trimmu Headworks can handle up to 800,000 cusecs. Rivaz Bridge, however, has a maximum capacity of 600,000 cusecs, highlighting the urgency of the precautionary measure.
