Sindh CM Warns of “Super Flood” as Preparations Intensify

Karachi – Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has warned that water levels of eight to 11 lakh cusecs in the Indus River could trigger a “super flood” situation. He emphasized that saving human lives is the top priority, followed by protecting animals, while critical infrastructure such as barrages must also be safeguarded.

“We are doing everything possible to prevent water from overflowing the river. Back in 2010, one million cusecs passed through the Guddu Barrage,” CM Shah said, noting that embankments have been raised six feet above the 2010 water level.

The government has made extensive preparations to handle water flows exceeding nine lakh cusecs. “Monitoring teams are stationed at every quarter-mile to patrol the bunds. During floods, protective dykes often develop leaks, which we are ready to plug immediately,” he added.

CM Shah also said the Army and Navy have been called in for assistance, particularly in operating PDMA boats. Villages most at risk have been identified, and the Health Department has been instructed to set up emergency camps.

The Chief Minister projected that floodwaters are expected to reach Punjnad first, which will help authorities estimate the volume of water approaching the Guddu Barrage. “The water is expected to peak at Guddu Barrage around September 6-7,” he said.

Referring to the 2010 floods, when the Indus carried 11 lakh cusecs of water, CM Shah stressed that preparations for the vulnerable katcha areas of Sujawal and Thatta districts have been finalized. “Our impact assessment shows that between five to 11 lakh cusecs could affect approximately 1.6 million people,” he added.
