Indus River Floods: Officials Monitor Rising Flows at Sindh Barrages

Karachi – The Sindh Irrigation Department reported on Tuesday that water levels in the Indus River are rising, though the current flows at Sindh’s major barrages remain manageable.

At Guddu Barrage, the river’s inflow was recorded at 360,777 cusecs, with an outflow of 345,375 cusecs. Sukkur Barrage saw an inflow of 280,850 cusecs, while 231,500 cusecs flowed out. Downstream at Kotri Barrage, the last major control point over the Indus in Sindh, the inflow stood at 273,844 cusecs, with 244,739 cusecs discharged.

Officials have warned that the river could carry a significant flood into Sindh by September 6–7. Currently, the barrages are experiencing low-level flooding.

Speaking at a press conference at the New Sindh Secretariat, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that four days ago, Qadirabad Barrage had recorded a flow of 1.077 million cusecs, with major tributary flows joining at Panjnad before entering the Indus at Kot Mithan.

He added that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had predicted flows between 800,000 and 1.1 million cusecs at Guddu Barrage around September 5, noting that “any flow above 900,000 cusecs is classified as a super flood.”

Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure timely alerts and preparedness for downstream communities.
