Government Reviews Food Prices and Flood Relief Measures in First Steering Committee Meeting
Islamabad – Senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, Energy and Petroleum Divisions, the State Bank of Pakistan, and other federal institutions convened in the first official meeting of the newly formed steering committee to address rising commodity prices and the impact of recent floods on vulnerable communities.
The committee reviewed the current market situation, focusing on essential food items such as wheat, rice, and sugar. Discussions centered on the challenges faced by low-income families and flood-affected populations.
The Ministry of Finance highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of food reserves and called for continuous monitoring of basic commodity prices. The committee also decided to strengthen coordination with provincial governments and federal agencies to implement effective administrative measures.
Efforts to improve supply chains, curb rising prices, and provide immediate assistance to families facing financial hardships were emphasized as top priorities for the government.
This meeting marks the first official session of the committee since its creation by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Recommendations from these discussions will be shared with the Prime Minister after consultations with various government departments.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz Sharif led a high-level review of flood-affected areas in Islamabad, reiterating the government’s commitment to the rehabilitation of flood victims. He stressed that rehabilitation remains a top priority and instructed officials to ensure real-time monitoring of evacuation and relief operations, particularly in southern regions near major rivers such as the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab.
