Karachi Ready for Floods Mayor Warns Residents

Karachi Mayor Assures Residents: City Prepared for Heavy Rain, Urges Caution on Roads

Karachi — The city administration is fully prepared to handle potential flooding following heavy rainfall, Karachi Mayor emphasized during a press conference on Friday.

The mayor said citizens should avoid rushing to the streets from offices or homes after rain, warning that such congestion can worsen traffic and block water drainage. “In previous rains, people thronging roads caused severe jams, which choked the streets,” he explained.

He assured that the city’s efforts would focus on keeping water drained efficiently. “If water stands anywhere, it will be cleared within two hours,” the mayor said.

The mayor noted that Karachi’s 46 nullahs and drains all lead into the sea. He highlighted that last night’s lunar eclipse coincided with high tides, making it difficult for the sea to accept water, causing it to push back instead. “Normally, water flows from Nehr-e-Khayam into Chinna Creek, but right now it’s moving in the opposite direction,” he added.

Despite these challenges posed by natural conditions, the administration has taken precautions. Pumps have been installed at 14 major underpasses to speed up drainage, and staff with machinery have been deployed to low-lying areas across the city.

The mayor concluded by reassuring residents that while nature poses its challenges, the city is ready to respond swiftly to any flooding.
