Chenab Sutlej Flood Alert Issued in Punjab
Flood Alert Issued as Chenab, Sutlej Rivers Swell
MULTAN/ISLAMABAD — Authorities in Multan have sounded an urgent evacuation alert as rising waters from the Chenab River reached the Shershah Bund, putting pressure on the protective embankments.
Loudspeaker announcements are being made across nearby localities, urging residents to leave immediately. Many families have already begun moving to safer areas as flood risks intensify.
Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Kathia, confirmed that floodwaters from the Chenab passing through Trimmu Barrage have entered Multan. “Another powerful flow of 575,000 cusecs is heading towards the city, which could further worsen the situation,” he warned.
Meanwhile, India has released additional water into the Sutlej River, raising fears of a new surge downstream. A high flood alert has been declared below the Harike and Ferozepur barrages.
According to official sources, the Indian High Commissioner informed Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources about the fresh release at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. This follows an earlier alert issued just a day ago.
The flood stream, after inundating large parts of central Punjab, is now sweeping through the southern districts, compounding the crisis.
