Selena Gomez on Arthritis and Rare Beauty Accessibility

Selena Gomez Opens Up About Arthritis and Making Rare Beauty Products Accessible

Selena Gomez, 33, who has been living with lupus since her 2013 diagnosis and underwent chemotherapy before receiving a kidney transplant from friend Francia Raisa in 2017, has revealed she now struggles with arthritis. In a recent interview, the singer and entrepreneur shared how her personal health journey inspired her to create beauty products that are easier for everyone to use.

“I have arthritis in my fingers, and that’s due to my lupus,” Gomez said. “I remember trying to open a water bottle before the brand, and it hurt really badly before I was on the right medication.”

She explained that this experience influenced the design of her products: “We somehow inherently made the products easy to open, and then we realized, wait — they kind of have to be that way. So we started making every product with the intention of working for anyone who has dexterity problems.”

The Disney alum emphasized the importance of accessibility: “I know that might seem like a little thing, but it’s really not. It’s actually so helpful for anyone at any age to be able to use the products. That’s why we want to make them easy and accessible — it’s always been important to me.”

Gomez, who recently launched her first perfume featuring a no-cap bottle design, added, “Even down to our fragrance, the pump is very easy for me to use.”

Rare Beauty, named after Gomez’s third studio album, was founded in September 2020, three years after her kidney transplant. The brand continues to reflect her personal experiences, blending beauty with accessibility and care.
