Royal Support Hits Record Low
Royal Family Support Hits Record Low Ahead of King Charles’ Trump Visit
Fresh figures from the British Social Attitudes survey reveal a striking decline in public support for the Royal Family. Just 51% of Britons now consider the monarchy important, a steep drop from 86% when the survey began in 1983.
The fall in backing comes at a sensitive moment, with King Charles preparing to host former US President Donald Trump on his second official visit to Britain from 16 to 18 September.
The survey highlights a significant shift in how the monarchy is viewed nationwide. Nearly a third of respondents now regard it as unimportant, and the number calling for its complete abolition has jumped to 15%.
When asked about the monarchy’s future, 58% still supported keeping the Royal Family, while 38% favoured replacing it with an elected head of state—a question appearing in the survey for the first time.
Support for the Royal Family is sharply divided along political and generational lines. Conservative voters remain loyal, while Labour supporters are evenly split. Younger Britons show increasing interest in an elected alternative, whereas older generations continue to back King Charles. In Scotland and Wales, most people now prefer an elected head of state, while loyalty remains stronger in England.
The timing of the survey is particularly notable. King Charles will meet Donald Trump in what is an unprecedented move in modern British diplomacy. The monarchy, already facing declining public confidence, is under renewed scrutiny as critics question its relevance in a changing society.
For King Charles, who has spent the early years of his reign balancing public expectations, the challenge is clear: the Royal Family must demonstrate its continuing importance just as support reaches historic lows.
With Trump’s high-profile visit shining a global spotlight on Windsor Castle, debates over the monarchy’s future have never been more pressing.
