Roti Naan Prices May Rise
Naanbais Threaten Price Hike Amid Soaring Flour Costs
ISLAMABAD — The Naanbai Association has warned of an imminent price hike for roti and naan if flour is not supplied at the government’s official rates.
Bakers said they could be forced to sell roti at Rs25 and naan at Rs30 if authorities fail to ensure a steady supply of flour at controlled prices. The association noted that flour costs have surged by nearly 70% in just two weeks and cautioned that protests could erupt nationwide if the crisis persists.
Wheat prices have seen a sharp jump, with rates in Punjab climbing from Rs2,200 to Rs2,800 per maund, raising fears of further inflation. A 20kg flour bag has already gone up by Rs100, while bakery owners earlier hinted at a Rs2 rise in roti prices.
In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, authorities recently banned the sale of 15kg flour bags amid mounting shortages. Flour mills have set the price of a 20kg bag at Rs2,400, while the government insists it be sold at Rs1,810. Similarly, mills are pricing 10kg bags at Rs1,200 against the official Rs905 rate.
The price of fine flour has also soared, with an 80kg sack now selling for as high as Rs10,500 — a steep jump from Rs7,000 just weeks ago.
